Dream Theater at Arena Santiago 2008
Yesterday I attended the concert of Dream Theater (band from New York and catalog the most knowledgeable in the style "progressive metal"). For someone whose musical tastes are as eclectic as his own personality, starting with classic jazz like John Coltrane or Miles Davis, along with some fusion as Alan Holdsworth and Mike Stern, splashing it all with rock and metal like AC / DC, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and all the way to Opeth and Meshuggah, and ending the trip with contemporaries such as Shostakovich, Penderecki, it is interesting to watch and listen to a band that includes in its repertoire influences as paradigmatic as those just mentioned and with relative success, achieve a proper harmony between both musical collage.
thing yesterday at Arena Santiago had something of this multifaceted condition - de facto - to Dream Theater and features which place today as one of the pioneering groups in the inclusiveness of progressivism in the metal, but also as a band who has earned the respect of his contemporaries and of criticism in general, both for the virtuosity of each of its members, as well as the ability to generate a support base might as multifaceted as their own music.
The concert began with a set of traffic lights (in reference to conceptual graph of his latest album "Systematic Chaos") on red even before his triumphal entry, when the light changes to yellow and finally green. The band begins with the melody of "Und Sprach Zarathustra" Richard Strauss composition classic and was world famous in the movie "2001: Odyssey to Space" by Stanley Kubrick. The grandeur of the piece is transferred to heavy guitars stimulated by angry battery plates, accompanied by strings efficiently synthesized keyboardist Jordan Rudess. In the last minute and while this brief introduction has already formed an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat is coming. Moreover when the last major chord leaves the public with their hands up and in a state of euphoria.
Without pausing, the American quintet actually opens the concert with the single "Constant Motion" from his latest album. The song that sounds like Metallica, with fast riffs and transitions, very 'up-beat' in the classic format rhythmic 4 / 4, sounds like energy discharge and spread to the public immediately. (There was, however, some problems sound at the beginning matter was fixed to the second or third item). He continued "Never Enough" and "Blind Fate", the albums "Octavarium" and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance "respectively. Both issues projected important part of the musical characteristics of Dream Theater on the one hand, keyboard solos and unison guitar, usually pointing more to technicality, speed and virtuosity that simple melodies, also soft melodic beginnings that grow with the progression of music and ending in true rock epiphanies of explosive (such as Blind Fate) . While both issues were cheered wildly by the audience, it was clear that discs which are inserted in these songs are most popular for people who are not necessarily fans of the band.
Without respite, Myung (bass), Portnoy (drums), Petrucci (guitar), Rudess (keyboards) and Labrie (vocals) give way to two of the most applauded and chanted for the night: Erotomania and Voices. Both belong to an epic composition of the album "Awake" called "A Mind Beside Itself" which is divided into three parts. The first (Erotomania) is an entirely instrumental and returning to highlight the technicality of the band. John Petrucci applause was very difficult to play a guitar solo near the end of the song almost without error. To the surprise of those present interpreted Voices, part of "A mind ..." trasiente passages and dark and gloomy, and lead to a peak vowel (Labrie here takes the applause) to swing in soft atmospheric sounds that mesmerized fans. Taking advantage of this atmosphere, the group goes to the interpretation of Surrounded, a ballad from their second album "Images & Words" and is interpreted modern and with some modifications from the original. From my perspective this was a culmination of moments of the night because, beyond the 'peace' of the piece, the audience chanted the complete song as well the play of light allowed a more intimate staging and blended with the hearing held by the duo of Petrucci and Rudess. In what may be considered a criticism is too much improvisation conducted by Petrucci, especially considering that - from my point of view - the ultra fast picking takes away some of the depth and intimacy that had been reached.
Two songs from the new album are as follows: "Forsaken" and "The Dark Eternal Night". Both issues more aggressive, although the first commercial cutting the second and that was probably the lowest of the night. "The Dark ...", on the other hand, again to blow up public heard so shocked an intricate but extremely heavy riff that becomes characteristic along the track. As elsewhere, the theme is developed showing off the skills of the musicians, alternating rhythmic patterns and music, changing styles and finishing in a swift demonstration of metal.
Already by the end, Dream Theater returns to a classic second album "Take the Time", another highlight of the night, especially for public participation. The issue, however, was not performed in its entirety (it took a full verse), but in general the response was very positive. After a few seconds of anticipation, the band dives in the interpretation of "In the Presence of the Enemies' epic composition around 25 minutes and that the disc is divided into two parts but was executed in full. There were clear signs that not everything the public was familiar with this particular issue. However, the melodic lines, the rise in intensity, changes in rhythmic patterns and guitar solos (beyond the clear mistake) and keyboard allow the public to become immersed in a kind of musical catharsis to the end. Crying (and planning) manage the band back on stage again and implement a Medley which includes "Trial of Tears", "Finally Free", "In the Name of God "(with only a completely stunning unison) and ending with the same grandeur with which he began running the end of the song" Octavarium "belonging to his self-titled album.
Overall it was a great concert. There are some details as Sound: Since it was at the Dome Arena Santiago, the sound was not the same for all locations, and I have the impression that people were heard in court better than a forum. However, the final feeling they all left with the impression of having attended a special night.
